Hobbies/sports:

Hobbies/Interests: I have been doing martial arts since I was 12years old. I have achieved junior 1st Dan in two other styles in the past. Kempo, at age 15 & Senshin ryu Karate at age 19.

Keeping fit is important to me and is something I enjoy though numerous activities such as mountain biking/ walking the dog, bodyweight and weights training at home and obviously through my martial arts training.

Other hobbies include:

  • Motorcycles – Making and riding
  • Playing guitar – Everything from blues too heavy metal

Why I started:

I needed something new.

I first started in 2010. I was looking for martial arts styles in the local area and came across Total body defence in the Risca. What started as an “I’ll just poke my head in through the door” scenario turned into a full blown love for the style. I was welcomed by our Chief instructor ‘Alun Williams’ who expressed and continues to express such enthusiasm and love for his club. Something that continues to rub off on all of us with each training session.

I also attend Extra Progressive Training sessions where possible.

What I like/What I have gained from TBD:

There are no ego’s, which provides a relaxed yet high quality surrounding to train in.

The passion is infectious & the pace of progression from all students within the club continues to amaze me. The style allows a personal diversity and flexibility of any technique learnt, which allows any student to adapt the style around their ability.

We as students are encourages students to have our own ideas, and challenge new scenarios that will test our newly honed skills. This helps you realize where you are in your training and help weed out any flaws. This is so important when training for reality.

The future:  The future can hold anything, but my main aim within the club is to continue to grow my skills and understanding as a student as you can never stop learning.

I now run the Cardiff TBD school (along with Gary cook 2nd dan). Something I have longed to achieve since I was of a young age. The ability to pass on the knowledge and experience I have gained within TBD, lends itself to an interesting and promising future for both me and future students.
